چکیده

Human endogenous retrovirus (HERVs) integrated in the human genome millions of years ago and became a stable part of the inherited genetic material. Most of these HERVs are dysfunctional due to numerous mutations and thus making it impossible to generate a full, infectious retrovirus particle from a single genetic locus. However, many HERVs are still exceptionally well preserved and maintain Open Reading Frames encoding functional viral proteins. The permanence of HERV ́s genes along evolution suggests that these elements have proven beneficial to human survival. In this regard, the expression of certain HERV proteins is implicated in important physiological functions, such as placental development. Nevertheless, reactivation of HERVs has frequently been observed in a variety of human tumors suggesting their potential to contribute to malignant progression. Considering the role of HERVs in the carcinogenesis process, the purpose of this mini review is to deepen into HERVs expression and its possible implication in hemato-oncologic disease development.

Human endogenous retroviruses: nature, occurrence, and clinical implications in human disease.

Retroviral diagnostics have become standard in human laboratory medicine. While current emphasis is placed on the human exogenous viruses (human immunodeficiency virus and human T-cell leukemia virus), evidence implicating human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) in various human disease entities continues to mount. Literature on the occurrence of HERVs in human tissues and cells was analyzed. Sub...

Identification and Phylogenetic Analysis of Schizophrenia Associated Retrovirus (SZRV) Element in the Human GenBank Database

A significant proportion of the human genome consists of interspersed repetitive DNA sequences. One type of repetitive DNA elements is human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs), representing about 1% of the human genome. Their structures closely resemble those of retroviruses, and include internal sequences with homology to gag, pol, and env open reading frames (ORFs) flanked by long terminal repea...

Involvement of Endogenous Retroviruses in Prion Diseases

For millions of years, vertebrates have been continuously exposed to infection by retroviruses. Ancient retroviral infection of germline cells resulted in the formation and accumulation of inherited retrovirus sequences in host genomes. These inherited retroviruses are referred to as endogenous retroviruses (ERVs), and recent estimates have revealed that a significant portion of animal genomes ...

Susceptibility of human liver cells to porcine endogenous retrovirus.

OBJECTIVES The risk of porcine endogenous retrovirus infection is a major barrier for pig-to-human xenotransplant. Porcine endogenous retrovirus, present in porcine cells, can infect many human and nonhuman primate cells in vitro, but there is no evidence available about in vitro infection of human liver cells. We investigated the susceptibility of different human liver cells to porcine endogen...

Endogenous Retroviral Elements in Human DNA 1

Endogenous retroviruses and retroviral elements represent a substan tial component of vertebrate genomes. They are inherited as stable Mendelian genes and may be activated spontaneously or by physical or chemical agents. In the human genome various retroviral elements have been detected by their relationship with mammalian endogenous and exogenous retroviruses. The structure of these elements r...
